An Announcement

DRUM ROLL PLEASE! OK, nothing that exciting to announce… I’m not getting married or something like that. Hahaha! But I do have my MRI results.

Yes, it’s a torn meniscus. It’s been torn for a long time. I asked if that meant like 10 years? My ortho surgeon said yes. So I now have my confirmation.

Over 10 years ago, I got my first golden retriever as a puppy. She was an adorable, rambunctious, but loving, pup.

When she was a year-old, 65-lb. puppy, she used to get a gleam in her eyes when we played in the yard together. Uh, oh. She’d begin by charging towards me, taking a flying leap and then bodyslamming herself into my knees. I’d see her gunning for me, but all I could do was brace for impact. She never took me out, but she sure tried.

My knees would hyperextend and it would HURT! My knees were never the same after that. Eventually my goofy pup realized it was useless to keep tackling me. It’s not like I was a pro football scout or anything.

But the damage was done. My baby tore my meniscus. And to think I worked in rescue for 6 years after that, and at the dog kennel for 4 years doing very physically demanding work. No wonder I was in pain 100% of the time and had problems even just walking down the hallway of my home… It’s amazing I was functioning all this time with a torn meniscus and didn’t know it.

Anyway, surgery is set for the end of January. Before my surgery, I’ll have a pre- op, like an EKG, blood test, etc. Oh, I also have wear and tear underneath the patella, a Baker’s cyst caused by the torn meniscus, and osteoarthritis.

I may have to have knee replacement surgery down the road thanks to my osteoarthritis. But I’m gonna do everything in my power to prevent that.

Could of been much worse…will they take the cyst out at the same time?? at least you have a surgery date and then it will be all up hill from there…pretty amazing that you can almost pinpoint the time of injury…..I twisted mine in the mud….but after my MRI I had a tear from years ago…I couldn’t even begin to pinpoint my initial injury….glad your getting it handled….Merry Christmas….Santa brought you a nice MRI !!!!

Well my Nikki did that to me several times. Way too often. And I remembered worrying about my knees then. And having major problems ever after. I also recently read that trauma causing hyperextending can really cause damage. I mean my knees were slammed back so hard… She would have knocked over most women. So yeah, I always suspected my issues stemmed from that. My sis assumed it was wear and tear, but the doctor said no.

Ironically, I had gotten my baby to get healthier… take her on walks, etc. but instead, I got worse! And later, I was walking big dogs, did physical labor, dealing with 25 shepherds, pit bulls, labs, etc, all at the same time, broke up large dog fights… And all with a torn meniscus. Good grief! I’m rather in awe I did all that.

One time, in the backyard, I was walking on a narrow sidewalk. Nikki ran up to me and punched me in my left side, hard, with her two front paws. I went over like a bowling pin. Right onto my right side. I landed on a concrete step. I was glad for all my extra padding cuz it didn’t really hurt too badly. But as I lay on my side, I started crying. Then Nikki stole a flip flop off my foot and ran off with it, which made me chuckle at her audacity. I just lay there on my side on the hard concrete, laughing and crying at the same time.

She was such a goof! She must have thought I was her playmate. She stopped her goofy ways when I added an adult, male, rescue golden to the mix. He was a bit of a bully at first, so she’d come to me whenever Parker stole all her toys. “Mommy! Help me!”

But luckily, since she now had a playmate, she stopped torturing her mommy. LOL!

ya, I have a loose piece of my meniscus in my knee and if I move it a certain way it is beyond pain, they wanted to go in and snip it off and scrap out the knee or arthritis, but I just don’t move my knee in that direction, it basically is better since I have dropped the weight and I can say I have only had that pain once in the last several months…YAY…my orhro said that most people have some sort of meniscus tear from childhood…and know that I am older and watch the younger generation trash there knees…I understand why…LOL

Yeah, they just go in and clean it up. The important thing is if it doesn’t interfere with your walking (no limping), no buckling, and no swelling. If it’s not doing that, then you can put surgery off. You will likely have a flare-up down the road, which means you’ll need to do the surgery then. My brother-in-law has a torn meniscus, and the day of the pre-op, everything cleared up. No pain, no swelling. He felt fine. So he cancelled it. It will come back. It’s what happened to me. About ten years ago, my knees hurt. I rested, etc. It cleared up. But I didn’t realize that the meniscus was torn. I had problems on and off for all this time, but I didn’t figure it out. I asked for PT for my knees. Had my eval and then my first visit in October. I got out of a car that evening to go to the gym and that’s when everything went to hell. So no clearing up this time. 😟

yes in 2010 I twisted my knee in the mud in the garden…thinking rest, advil, ice so after 6 months I went to the MD, they put me on motrin…then after 1 year I had PT, then after limping and gimping around in pain I went to a sports MD…I guess I was hoping for a cure…he offered cortisone shots, rest and more PT…passed on the shot but took the PT….it helped maybe 1% then I went to my hubby’s ortho…he wanted a MRI that’s when we leant I had an old tear…no surgery just weight loss would be best and continue on anti-inflammatory….so it was going on 2 years and I was having some real pain…no weight loss but still whining…so I went back to my sports MD who I love, he took a bunch of xrays…whoola…arthritis on my left knee….only have 1/2 left on the left side…my right knee is starting but no where as deteriorated as the left…he offered cortisone, but can only do that 3 times, and he offered some gel crap he would put in between the bones to help, but just a band aide…he said the best thing would be weight loss or a total knee…so here I am 68#’s lighter and the extreme pain is gone, I baby it like its a fragile piece of crystal…never go up or down stairs without taking them 1 step at a time…best thing I learned for me was the pool…keep it moving…that was part of my trouble, I barely moved it before..glad your getting yours taken care of…and yes some day, hopefully far, far away……I will have to have my knee dealt with, hopefully I will be at my goal weight and it won’t be an issue….luv from your knee sister…LOL kat

We’re so much alike! I have arthritis in both knees. The ortho surgeon thinks I’ll need a knee replacement in the future. Heck no! I’m 47 lbs lighter, but have quite a lot more to lose. I intend to get down to my goal weight and hopefully won’t need a knee replacement then. And yes, keep moving. The pool is great. I have to deal with stairs in my current place. Townhouse. Funky stairs from the 70s. I go up and down one step at a time and use my cane. Can’t wait to move to a nicer place… A one-story, but need more income. The meniscus surgery is supposed to really help mobility and pain. Sure hope so! Congrats on your weight loss! That’s awesome.

Yeah, I haven’t been online much. My surgery is on the 28th so I’m dealing with the prep stuff. I have to get an EKG, a chest x-ray, and a blood test in the next few days. Not looking forward to it. How are you?

I sure hope so! My life’s been on hold. I’ve got stuff I need to do to get prepared before Thursday. All the testing… I even bought inexpensive luggage to go to my sister’s so I wouldn’t show up with garbage bags… I still have to pick up the bags at Sears… I wish I had someone to help me get the bags since walking is so hard… What projects are you working on?

That’s a lot of work! I can imagine how sore you are! Got all my tests done. Chest X-ray and blood/urine done today. EKG yesterday. As for the luggage, everything went wrong. They brought out the wrong luggage. So I still don’t have it. Long story.

Oh, thank you! I appreciate it. Well, gonna try to p/u at another Sears. But what a pain. The funny thing is, they brought out a 4-piece set in blue. Mine was a 3-piece set in raspberry. I knew instinctively the 4-piece was more expensive, but I didn’t want it. I wanted my girly-girl color. That Sears no longer had the one I wanted. But it’s supposed to be at another mall. Then there was a problem cuz they had to return mine and re-purchase it. There seemed to be a discrepancy in the price. I had bought it for $54, but now it was $69! I looked online, and yep, the price had jumped up! That blue set they tried to give me? The one I didn’t like? It’s going for $199.99!

that was there plan…we went to sears here in Yuma to buy a new vacuum…they didn’t have but one that was returned that I wanted, it has to be one without brushes…anyway the sales person told me he wouldn’t buy it….we should go somewhere else…LOL Needless to say I think Sears has gone down hill since K Mart was purchased by them….good luck and I would want the raspberry colored ones to…my old ones were bright orange….easy to find at an airport…LOL

Oh, how sweet! Yes, I have wifi. Thursday, I was pretty out of it. I couldn’t multi-task to save my life. Friday, I was pretty uncomfortable. My knee is pretty swollen. I’m going to take a shower today. I have to wrap the knee in a garbage bag cuz the bandage and the stitches can’t get wet. It’s not gonna be fun. I slept well Thursday night, but not last night. I heard I have significant arthritis. That bummed me out to hear that. I believe the surgery took 40 minutes, which is on the high side. I’ll find out more on Feb 3.
